at the family home, authorities say the young man headed to the sandy hook elementary school, wearing a bulletproof vest. authorities say he was armed with a semiautomatic assault rifle and two high-powered pistols like these. police say both his mother and his father legally owned a number of guns of the same kind. a relative said adam was obviously not well. >> we'll go backwards as far as we have to go in this investigation, and hopefully we'll stumble on answers. >> reporter: but what even the crime profilers are having a hard time trying to figure out is why the attack on the children. most of them killed on the spot, according to authorities. the only theory is based on reports that his mother, divorced three years ago and unemployed, may have worked as a teachers' aide at the school. >> the children didn't harm him, but they were associated with his mother and his mother may be the real focus all of this. the anger and rage and resentment has built up in him over a number of years, and he decided, i've been powerless all this time, and now i'm going to empower myself. >> report

with six pink candles. a first grader at sandy hook elementary. she loved to draw, wanted to be an artist when she grew up. she often would turn parts of her house into a mini-art studio, by taping rows of her drawings to the wall. her parents say allison sometimes surprised her parents with random acts of kindness to strangers, once offering her own snacks to fellow passengers on the plane. alison loved to laugh, was developing her own sense of humor. she would sometimes make her parents cry with laughter. they write, allison made the world a better place for six far too short years and we now have to figure out how to move on without her. she was a sweet, creative, funny, intelligent little girl who had an amazing life ahead of her. our world is a lot darker now that she's gone. dawn hochsprung was known as a tough educator who always found time to smile. she was 47 years old and principal of sandy hook elementary school. her pride in her school was obvious to anyone who knew her. friends and colleagues alike say she had a positive energy and a strong work ethic. she constantly tweeted

grade at sandy hook elementary school. cnn's jason carroll joins me now with more on that vigil. how is this community dealing with this extraordinary loss right now? >> they're just completely torn up. there's no other way to say it, to see the number of people, hundreds who came out here at stratford high school. this is where victoria, vicki as everyone called her, vicki soto, this is where she graduated back in 2003. when everyone got together here tonight, they did their best to remember her. they talked about how soto always wanted to be a teacher, ever since she was a little girl. she talked about wanting to be a teacher, that's what her friends said. tonight they talked about the heroic actions that she took in her classroom when the gunman burst through the door, how she rushed the kids into a closet to try and save them and then of course the gunman took her life. as we were out here tonight with her sisters and her brother, her cousins and all of her friends, and doing what they can to remember her, i spoke to one young woman, a friend of soto's for many, many years. just

connecticut 9:30 tomorrow morning marking the moment one week earlier when bullets ripped through the sandy hook elementary can school. final preparations are being made for tributes to the 26 students and educators who were killed last friday morning at that elementary school. poppy harlow spoke with one of the boyfriends of one of the victims buried today, lauren rousseau. tomorrow morning, 9:30 a.m. eastern, poppy. >> reporter: absolutely, wolf. i mean, this community is still reeling. they are really living minute by minute here trying to get by. lauren rousseau, this beautiful young woman, 30 years old, told her mother that she had wanted to be a teacher since before she was even in kindergarten. she got to live out that dream but her life was cut far too short. >> this says, me, since i've been with you. thanks for rubbing off on me. >> reporter: 30 and in love, tony and lauren rousseau. do you remember the moment that you were in love with her? >> yes. like right -- the first date i had with her i knew. >> reporter: at a wine bar where they shared their first kiss. lauren called him
